చాలా సార్లు కొన్ని పెయింటింగ్స్ చూడగానే మంచి బ్రష్ లు వీళ్ళు వాడలేదు అని తెలిసిపోతుంది . బ్రష్ ల గురించి కాస్త అవగాహన ఉండటం, ఎలాంటి వర్క్ కి ఏ రకం బ్రష్ ఉపయోగపడుతుందో గ్రహించటం ముఖ్యం . Oil paint బ్రష్ ల గురించి నెట్లో చదివినవి ,ఆర్టిస్ట్ group ల చర్చల నుంచి అప్పుడప్పుడు నేను రాసుకున్న నోట్స్ ని మీతో పంచుకుంటున్నా !
పెయింట్ బ్రష్ లను మూడు భాగాలుగా చూడచ్చు !
Bristles : పెయింట్ ను పట్టుకునే hair. దీంతోనే మనం పెయింట్ చేస్తాము . ఈ hair కోసం అడివిపంది ,గుర్రం ,ఉడుత,ఒంటె ,మేక ,ఎద్దు (Badger,Camel,Hog Bristle,Kolinsky Sable ,Black Sable, Red Sable, Ox,Pony,Squirrel) లాంటి కొన్ని జంతువుల బొచ్చు వాడతారు.కొన్ని జంతువుల వెంటుకలు గట్టిగా,గరుకుగా ఉంటాయి . వీటితో చేస్తే bristle brushes లేదా hog hair brushes అంటారు ,మరి కొన్ని జంతువులవెంటుకలు మెత్తగా సున్నితంగా ఉంటుంది . వీటితో చేస్తే sable brushes అని పిలుస్తారు . ఇంకా సింథటిక్ (నైలాన్,పాలిస్టర్ ) బ్రష్ లు కూడా వాడుతారు .
Ferrule : hair ను పట్టుకునేందుకు హేండిల్ని కలిపేందుకు మధ్యలో మెటల్ బ్యాండ్ ఉంటుంది .దానినే ferrule అంటారు.ఎప్పుడూ పెయింట్ మెటల్ బ్యాండ్ వరకూ పోకూడదు.అంటే మెటల్ బ్యాండ్ వరకూ ముంచకూడదు. పెయింట్ మెటల్ బ్యాండ్ లోకి పోతే అది ఎండిపోయి hair ని చిదిపేస్తుంది .బ్రష్ పాయింట్ పోగొట్టుకుంటుంది .
Handle: హ్యాండిల్స్ చెక్క లేక ప్లాస్టిక్కుతో చేసి ఉంటాయి .పొడుగాటి హేండిల్ ఉండే బ్రష్ లు క్లాసిక్ అనవచ్చు . పొడుగాటి బ్రష్ లతో కాస్త దూరంగా నిలబడి పని చేస్తున్నపుడు కంపోజిషన్ , perspective ని గమనించుకోవచ్చు . మన బ్రష్ మన చేతికికాని చేతి వేళ్ళకు కానీ పొడిగింపు అనుకోవాలి . వర్క్ ని బాగా enjoy చేయచ్చు .
Oil paint brush shapes: Fan(blending కి ఉపయోగపడుతుంది ), Round(detail వర్క్ కి ), Flats(rectangular బ్రష్ లు ఎక్కువరంగుని పట్టు కుంటాయి ఎక్కువ area ని కూడా cover చేస్తాయి ) Filberts (flats but with rounded sides) , Brights ( a flat brush, but with shorter hairs)
Oil paint brush sizes: ఈ బ్రష్ లు తక్కువ నెంబర్ నుంచి ఎక్కువ నెంబర్ వరకూ ఉంటాయి.అంటే 0000 (or 4/0)అంటే 0 సైజు కన్నా తక్కువ .అక్కడి నుచి 24 వరకు సైజు లు ఉంటాయి . మనకి పని చేసేకొద్దీ అర్థమవుతుంది . ఏవి అవసరమో ! మొదట mid-to-large bristle brushes and a couple small-to-midsize sable brushes తో పని మొదలు పెట్టచ్చు.
కొన్ని సూచనలు :
– ఎప్పుడూ రంగులను పైలట్ నైఫ్ తో కలపాలి అంతే కానీ బ్రష్ తో కాదు . బ్రష్ తో కలిపితే బ్రష్ తొందరగా పాడవడమే కాక రంగు సరిగ్గా కలవదు. రంగు పైకివచ్చి బ్రష్ వెంటుకులను పట్టుకునే మెటల్ Ferrule లోకిదిగి ఎండి బ్రష్ వెంట్రుకలు చెల్లాచెదురు అవుతాయి .
– పెయింటింగ్ వేసేటపుడు బ్రష్ తోpushing చేయకూడదు.pull చేయాలి
– పాయింట్ చెదిరి పొయ్యిన బ్రష్ లను వాడితే పెయింటింగ్ సరిగ్గా కుదరదు .ముఖ్యం గా details వర్క్ చేసేటపుడు . కనుక వాటిని పక్కన పడేసి మళ్ళీ కొత్త బ్రష్ లను వాడాలి.
– bristle brushes ఆయిల్ పెయింటింగ్ కి sable బ్రష్ లు వాటర్ కలర్స్ కి వాడాలి అంటారు అది తప్పు . fine డీటెయిల్స్ కి smooth గా బెండ్ చేయడానికి ఆయిల్స్ లో కూడా sable బ్రష్ లు వాడాలి .కనుక ఏ బ్రష్ లు అయినా ఏ రంగులకైనా వాడచ్చు . కాకపోతే ఆయిల్స్ కి వాడే బ్రష్ లు వేరేగా వాటర్ కలర్స్ కి వాడే బ్రష్ లు వేరేగా పెట్టుకోవాలి. కలిపి వాడకూడదు .
– నేను చూసిన ఆర్ట్ టీచర్ ,ఆర్టిస్ట్ అయిన ఒకతను పెయింటింగ్ చేసేటపుడు ఒక్కొక్కరంగుకు ఒక్కొక్క బ్రష్ చొప్పున ఆరేడు బ్రష్ లు వాడుతాడు . అంతేకాని ఒక బ్రష్ ను కడిగి మళ్ళీ ఇంకో రంగులో ముంచేపని చెయ్యడు .
– బ్రష్ లను పని అయిన తరువాత పేపర్ టవల్ తో బాగా తుడిచి ,ఇంకా మిగిలిన రంగు పోయేవరకు ఆయిల్స్ లో జిల కొట్టి సోప్ తో కడిగి పెట్టుకోవచ్చు .ఆయిల్స్ బ్రష్ hair ని damage కానీ dry కానీ చేయవు. కాబట్టి rinse చేయడానికి refined linseed oil ,safflower oil , walnut oil, Johnson’s baby oil లాంటివి వాడచ్చు .
-బ్రష్ లు చెదిరిపోయినపుడు పాలలో ముంచి పేపర్ టవల్ తో బ్రష్ చివరను చుట్టి ఆరనివ్వాలి . కొంతమంది దారంతో హెయిర్ ని కట్టిపెడతారు . హెయిర్ జెల్ కూడా కొందరు ఉపయోగిస్తారు .

Oil Paint Brushes
A while ago I got a comment from a senior artist that I didn’t use right brushes for one of my works. You need to know little about your paint brushes and should take time to find out which works well for you. I felt that because a lot of information is available, it’s better to give links for basics rather than writing it all again.

Some tips on oil paint brushes
– Always mix colors with a pallet knife, not with brushes. With a brush the colors won’t mix well.
– Don’t fill your brush with paint up to the ferrule. If paint dries at the ferrule juncture, your brush will be that much harder to clean. Plus the bristles will spread out and your brush will lose its point.
– don’t push your brushes into the canvas. Instead, try to use a pulling motion with your strokes
– You may have heard the rule that bristle brushes are for oil and sable for watercolor. Ignore it. Sable-type brushes are wonderful for oil painting. Just remember, if you work in different media, absolutely do not go back and forth between oil, acrylic and watercolor with the same brush, unless you want to totally ruin your paintings — and your brushes.
– A well-known art teacher and artist uses about seven to ten brushes for each painting. He doesn’t like to wash or clean the brushes again and again in the middle of the painting.
– You clean your oil-paint brushes in turps (or mineral spirits) and then you dip them in oil (such as refined linseed oil, safflower oil, walnut oil, Johnson’s baby oil) and store them.You dip them in it thoroughly, so that the oil gets in the heal of the brush, that way any paint residue won’t be able to dry in the brush while it is stored.
Tips for acrylic paint brushes by Artist Daisy Roland
– As you hold the brush under the water tap to clean it, use your fingers to spread the bristles wide, right down to the ferrule, and let the water run strongly between all the bristles. Only by doing this can you remove all the paint — it doesn’t ruin your brush; what will ruin your brush is to leave any build-up of paint there. Some artists use soap while they do this, but it should be rinsed out.
– As you paint, have a jar of water handy, and stand any brush that you won’t be using again soon in the water, to stop it drying out. And soaking brushes this way in water for an hour before washing them makes cleaning so much easier.
– Finally, if you do get a paint brush that you forgot to clean and it goes stiff with dried paint — don’t throw it out. The scratchy marks that this brush can give you might add interesting texture as you finish your painting. It’s worth experimenting with.
